In the midst of his own losses, Robert spent years caring for other people. Prior to moving to Kansas City in 2020, he was the primary caretaker for his sick and elderly parents. His parents had secured a reverse mortgage on the family home to cover soaring medical expenses, and the bank foreclosed within a month of his mother’s passing. Afterwards, he moved to Kansas City to be closer to his sister and became a beloved janitor with the Blue Valley School System. Robert relied on his 18-year-old vehicle as his sole mode of transportation to work and as his connection to his remaining sister. Last year, Robert’s car died. His lack of transportation isolated him from his family and forced him to spend holidays alone. He, however, bravely continued supporting the school and its students by walking three miles to and from work each day. His colleagues say that he is an asset to the building- especially during the COVID pandemic- by keeping their school clean and safe for students to continue in-person learning.
On December 22, 2021, gracious donors, Road Worthy, and generous coworkers in the school were able to match Robert with a new car, registration, tags, and insurance. Robert’s perseverance demonstrates the amazing impact of doing the next right thing.
Congratulations, Robert. It is an honor that you allowed us to help you the same way that you have helped others. We hope you enjoy your new vehicle and that your life be filled with love and light
